Francis runner in Workshop (Voith)China has the ability to independently design and manufacture world's largest hydropower-generating units, with a single-unit capacity of 1 million kilowatts, according to news from the China Three Gorges Project Corporation on Wednesday.

Based on Wudongde and Baihetan hydropower stations along the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, the design work of the world's largest hydropower generating units will be completed within this year. China has rich hydropower resources and advanced hydropower engineering, but the level of development of hydropower is far lower than developed countries. China, as a country with high carbon emissions, faces huge pressure, so developing renewable energy is one of the key ways to develop a low-carbon economy.

Currently, the maximum capacity of hydropower generating units is 700,000 kilowatts and the United States has three, Brazil has 20 and China has 26.
